As users continue to pour onto Social Media sites, you have to stop and wonder why. No one really talks about the reasons people sign up for the sites and what motivates a user to post, comment, and share on them. It’s a crucial question to ask, especially as a business.
Why are people flocking to use Social Media sites?
You could talk about all the success stories of companies, viral campaigns, and individuals. But for the rest of us that never have the thousands of followers, what is it that keeps us coming back to partake and spend countless hours on them? I would have to say it is the chance to be heard. Your posts, pictures, videos, and life is exposed to others for them to comment on and interact with. When I post a picture that gets a 100 comments on Instagram I am surprised! But it makes me feel good that people I don’t even know leave me comments and praises. When I play a song on Turntable.fm and I see all those bobbing heads to the song I played I have a sense of pride for participating in the community. When my friend gets a new set of glasses from the maker after posting about how he got hit by a car with them on I revel in the power that a single voice can have…
So, it’s almost as if we seek empowerment.
The real question: What Value do users get from using these sites?
Everyone is different, but for me I feel like I belong and am embraced by the community. As a human, the fundamental need to belong is essential to our survival. The web offers a venue to continually connect with the communities that holds the same interests that you do.
In this day and age people are being inundated with media that is constantly trying to tell them what to do, and never listens to what they have to say. Social media allows them to have a voice, an opinion. Many companies are struggling to grasp how to engage with their customers in ways that will drive sales and an ongoing relationship. Well, keep these two points in mind.
– Users are looking for empowerment. So interact with them in ways that communicate that you want to empower them.
– Users want to be a part of something unique. People can tell instantly that you have alternative prerogatives or don’t really care about them, so work to create a unique experience with content, conversations, and goals.
Listen. Find a Voice. Be Consistent.
